Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2012. Grant, Olivia and I are now residing in Manhattan, KS after moving out of Hilton Head,SC in Spring. The photo on this card was taken with our family in the Philippines on a January outing this year. We are enjoying our new home, new friends and family.

Whole Wheat Pulvoron

Pulvoron, pronounced as "pull-vau-raun", is a popular Filipino candy that is made with toasted flour, powdered milk, sugar, butter, and vanilla. Shaped with Pulvoron Mold then wrapped in colorful Japanese paper or Papel de Hapon. I used tissue paper as I can't find Japanese paper.

 I'm sharing my mom's recipe that she used in our little bakery back home. My tweaked version of these has been influenced by my second home, the United States. So here is my version of a Filipino-American Pulvoron using Whole Wheat Flour. Enjoy!

Pulvoron Mold

Whole Wheat Pulvuron

1/4 C raw pinipig (alter with Rice Krispies)

1 C sifterd APF (alter it with Wheat Flour)

1/2 C full cream powdered milk

1/2 C white sugar

1/2 C butter, softned

1/2 tsp Real Vanilla

Instructions:

1. On a pan, toast flour in a moderate heat for about 15 minutes, or until light brown, stir constantly to avoid burning.
 
2. Remove the pan and transfer the mixture on a big bowl.
 
3. Add the powdered milk, toss for another 3-4 minutes.
 
4. Add sugar, melted butter and vanilla. Mix well.
 
5. Fill the mold with the mixture, press it down, then release it, if it is still too loose, add more butter. Make sure that you could pick up the polvoron without it crumbling straight away.
 
6. Place the polvoron in a airtight container, chill in the fridge until firm.
 
7. Carefully wrap the polvoron individually in japanese paper or colorful tissue paper.
 
8. Makes 2 dozen when using a one-inch mold.

DIY Snowflake Ornament

I've always wanted to make these after Laurie watched Olivia when she was only a baby one night in December. Grant and I had to attend a Christmas Party. But I was struck with the ornaments that were made with toilet paper tube. Since Olivia was too young then, I saved the idea. And, I want to share it with you.

You will need:

Toilet Paper Tube

Pair of Scissors

Glue Gun and Glue sticks

My Jewel Sorter

faux-jewels, glitter, buttons (I used the first one on this project) use whatever you have on hand.

Not Pictured: Twine for hanging the ornament and Ruler

Picture Directions:

Take your TP tube and flatten it. Using the pair of scissors cut the flatten tube to 0.25 inch.

Glue 7 cut up tube pieces together. You may use up to 9 piece depending on how you want your snowflake to look.

It will look like so. Glue embellishment on the center.

Add twine.

 

Call your helper to hang them on the tree

They'll look good on everything.

You may even use them as gift accent.

Christmas Trees

Putting a tree up? Mine stood with confidence before Thanksgiving as my 3-year old daughter kept asking me when I'm going to put the lights on. I love feeding my daughter's imagination. After taking her to a local library for story time, which was about trains. We came home and pretended that our apartment was one of the cabins. It was magical. Then, it all ended when she said 'we don't live in a train, this is an apartment'. Is your calendar filled with fun Christmas activities? Whatever they maybe have fun! Here are pictures I took yesterday at the Festival of Trees in Manhattan, KS.

Mediterranean Sisig

Do you remember the Sizzling Sisig post? Click here if you want to know what Sisig is. Well I've got another version of this famous Filipino dish. It's one of those random creations I came up with. Last night, Grant cooked Adobo using pork chops. And, we had so much leftover. Adobo is always good leftover  but then I started thinking about Sisig. So here's what I came up with....

Mediterranean Sisig

Leftover (3 large porkchop) Pork Adobo, shredded

1 Large Onion, chopped

2 Tbsp Olive oil

2 Tbsp Kalamata Olives, chopped

2 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar

Pepper to taste

In a skillet drizzle 1 Tbsp of Olive oil. Add the shredded Pork Adobo. Pan-fry meat until the desired crispness is achieved. Take it out from the pan. On a chopping board, transfer over the meat and coarsley chop it. In a bowl combine meat, onions, oil, olives, vinegar and pepper. Mix thoroughly. Serve over rice or in a wrap. Yum! Ooops wait, yes I didn't forget about salt. There's no salt on the recipe because the olives will give this Sisig that Mediterranean flavor. Don't you like plain stuff? You can modify and put so much flavor into things? The sky is truly the limit. I hope you can come up with a new dish using familiar recipes.

Beautiful Things

Who doesn't appreciate beauty right? The beauty of nature, the beauty of a newborn baby, the beauty of a rising sun, the beauty of an old photograph. I guess it's up to you how to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. I love beautiful things and makes me happy. Beauty inspires me.  Here are some of the things that I find beautiful this week.

Color Blending or Color Matching? What do you prefer?

These are my daughter's beautiful feet. I love jelly shoes. She has 2 pairs, one black and one white. The strap on both pairs broke so I had to think of  a solution where she can still wear them without them coming off her feet. I used leftover ribbons as new straps. and I have many. :) So, Voila! She can still wear them.

And meet the beautiful Daphne. She's one of the many women I admire right now. Her style is classic and one of a kind. And, I love how she talked about different textures here. Oh so beautiful!

I really don't understand having a grand wedding dress then it immediately goes to the closet after the wedding. If I get a chance to have a wedding ceremony I would wear something like this. I'd definitely wear it on other special occassions.

Here's something to ponder...."If beauty comes from within why can't it be reflected on the outside too? You are beautiful inside and out"

Shoes on the Rocks with Salt

When you find comfortable high-heeled shoes. You wanna wear them over and over again. And, that's what I've been doing. I just dress them by clipping shoe clips from Clipits Designs. I love my T-strap jade shoes.

Clipits' shoe clips made with chiffon fabric. The fun embellishments on the center were from a pair of dangling earrings, which I got from a craft show from a lady who sold vintage jewelries.

Fallin' in Love with Fall

I'm really not that hard to please. I just can't help to take pictures. Everytime I see a tree, no matter how many leaves are on it, that makes me happy already. So here are the snapshots I'd like to share with you today. Note: these were taken via my iPhone, I forgot to bring my regular camera. I thought they turned out good.

'Fall'ow the Hilly Road

It was a very quiet Sunday for us today. No errands to run. Crockpot Lunch. Church. And, a random drive around the neighborhood. I admire foliage and so the searh was on. There wasn't a lot of it but enough to admire and enjoy. My camera lens witnessed it all!

These are no Ruby slippers but they sure are whimsical.

 I told you there's not much foliage but one tree sure stood out.

After visiting some loved ones who passed. I noticed these beautiful trees.

A Road that curved around.

A hilly road. Kansas is not so flat after all.

I hope your weekend was relaxing and enjoyable.
