Sizzling Sisig

Do you know what Sisig is? Sisig is a Filipino dish that originated from Angeles City, Pampanga. The term sisig means "to eat something sour". The dish consists of pig ears, pig face and/or parts of the pig's head, liver, calamansi (native lemon), onions and chili pepper. It is best served on a sizzling plate. It is one of the dishes that I crave the most. My husband, Grant loves it as well. After a couple trips to the Philippines he was exposed to my mom's homecooking and Sisig is one of her winning recipes. Who wouldn't fall in love with it when you pair it with ice cold Red Horse Beer.

But today I'd like to share with you a healthier version of Sisig. When I craved for this last week, I told myself that I will recreate Filipino dishes and make them healthy. Grant and I enjoy food and different cuisines. But we want to be able to eat what we want and be healthy at the same time. I am excited at this new challenge. To start out here is my healthy version of Sisig. Enjoy.

Chicken and Pork Sisig

1 & 1/2 lb. Chicken leg
1/2 lb. Pork Chop
1 Tbsp. Cajun Seasoning or Seasoned Salt
1 Tbsp. Oil

Pre-heat oven at 350 degrees F. Place chicken and pork in a bowl. Drizzle oil over the meat. Sprinkle the Cajun seasoning. Then, using your hands mix it all together for five minutes. Transfer meat on a sheet pan. Arrange meat one inch apart from one another. This will roast the meat evenly and achieve a crispy texture. Roast for 1 hour or until meat is crispy on the outside. Let it rest for half hour or until cool enough to handle. Remove bone from meat. Chop meat and set aside.

1 medium Onion, chopped
1 Tbsp Cilantro, chopped
1 Tbsp Parsley, chopped
1 tsp Black pepper, freshly ground
1 tsp Hot sauce
1 tsp pepper flakes (optional)
2 Tbsp Olive oil

In a bowl, combine meat and all ingredients mentioned above. If you're asking why there's no salt mentioned on the recipe. It's because the meats were well-seasoned before roasting. That's where we want all the flavors to be. But, you may add a little bit of salt if you wish.

I served this sizzling style. You may do so even without a sizzling plate. Just get a small skillet or a pan. Set stove on high. Once your pan is really hot dump in your sisig. Serve with rice and Enjoy!

Note: Leftover? Use leftover sisig by putting it in a wrap or taco. Add avocado and coleslaw in it. Yum! It can also be added on nachos.

Or add it on your salad!

I was happy to come up with this healthier version of Sisig without compromising its authentic taste. Enjoy!

Nostalgia

Although these latest creations are made at present. The inspiration comes from the past. I can't deny that my love for something old has evolved because that can be seen with my current work. Come see me at the Farmer's Market tomorrow.

Maybe it was because I was raise by my grandparents. That's the only reason I could think of of why old things seems to be very appealing. Gradually, I'm learning who I really am. I am an Old Soul who lives in this Modern world. I know it sounds weird. But that's me.

I'm having fun looking for home accessories for the apartment. Yesterday, my friend Lanie and I went window shopping. I was shopping for Olivia's birthday party. To my frustration, I couldn't find any Dr.Seuss items. Instead, I found two old luggage for $5. Hence, I've got a coffee table except it might be moved around later on. That made my day. I want to mention that the person-in-charge that day was Ben. He was nice to us and gave us a great deal. Stop by and look at their items.

Back to School 2011

You think children are the only one who suffer from Separation Anxiety? Well, let me tell you that I probably have it right now. Olivia was going to pre-school part of the day. And, it was great because I can pursue some things in the daytime and spend time with her in the afternoon. Yesterday, she started going full day. I was heartbroken. She and I were together since she was born. I was very fortunate to have spend the three years nurturing her. She is growing too fast. In a couple weeks she'll be turning three. Where did time go? I'm sure if you're a parent you know what I'm talking about.

While she's in school I get to do some fun things where I can channel my creativity. I made these cute and colorful hair clips that will make your daughter stay well-groomed and stylish in this upcoming school year. These are made with felt, button and ribbon. I personally hand cut the felt, sew the buttons and put it on a lined clip.
